In a struggling Amish settlement on the harsh Colorado plain, Abbie Weaver refuses to concede defeat to hail, drought, and coyotes, even as families begin to give up and return east. The biggest challenge of all is the lack of a spiritual shepherd and regular worship. When Abbie discovers the root of a spiritual divide that runs through the settlement, she faces her own decisions about what she believes. She must choose between a quiet love in her cherished church, passion with a man determined to leave the church, or imagining her life with neither.

As an Amish settlement struggles to survive on the stark Colorado plain, Abbie Weaver stubbornly refuses to leave even as friends return east. It's not life in the wild that disturbs Abbie, it's the lack of spiritual guidance. But when Abbie falls for a man who's determined to leave the church, she must decide whether to stay strong in her faith and lose the one she loves, or go with him and sever her connection to God. VERDICT In this series opener, Newport ("Hidden Falls" series) introduces a little-known slice of Amish history in the early days of the Western frontier. Her characters are humanely formed, and her depiction of their struggles to survive in a harsh environment is very convincing. Recommended for fans of Wanda E. Brunstetter and those interested in Amish history and historical romances. [Shiloh Run is Barbour's new genre fiction and nonfiction imprint.--Ed.]
